<p><span class="p-body">Born in Lima, Peru, Mauricio Ubillus-Rejas moved to New York 16 years ago and became a naturalized US citizen. Today, he's pursuing an <a href="/content/sps-nyu/explore/degrees-and-programs/ms-in-real-estate-development.html" target="_blank">MS in Real Estate Development</a> at NYU SPS, with a focus on sustainable development. When he isn't making his mark on the global real estate industry, he says, "I love working out, traveling, reading, volunteering, and, from time to time, I love to write." We were excited to learn more about Ubillus-Rejas and his time at NYU SPS, so we sat down with him to ask all our burning questions.</span></p>
Choosing NYU
<p><span class="p-body">Ubillus-Rejas was drawn to NYU for its reputation as a prestigious university with a strong track record in the real estate world. </span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">His time at NYU has been more than just a one-time experience. He previously earned a bachelor's degree in Real Estate and Urban Sustainability at the NYU School of Professional Studies, graduating in December 2023. Now, he's back to further his knowledge and skills in real estate development.</span></p>

A Supportive Community with Meaningful Connections
<p><span class="p-body">During his time at NYU, Ubillus-Rejas quickly found a sense of community among professors, advisors, and fellow students. "I met so many people with different backgrounds, and all of them were super supportive," he says. These connections have played a crucial role in his educational experience. Among the influential figures, he mentions Assistant Director of Advising and Student Services Jennifer Yeun, Professor Donatella Delfino, Professor Michael Joseph Netta, Dean Marc Norman, and Senior VP of Asset Management at Brookfield Properties Mark Kostic. Their guidance has made a significant impact on his experience so far.</span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">As a student, Ubillus-Rejas has gained valuable exposure to tools and knowledge that he applies to his current role in North American retail real estate at the Estée Lauder Companies. His studies, particularly his focus on sustainable development, have equipped him with the skills needed to thrive. "NYU SPS gives you the tools to be prepared and ready in the real estate industry," he notes, emphasizing the practical benefits of his education.</span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">Outside of academics, Ubillus-Rejas has been involved in the Rainbow Alliance at NYU. Initially, the Rainbow Alliance was inactive when he started his program. In an effort to revive the club, he sent out a survey and received resounding support from fellow LGBTQIA+ students. "I became the president, and together, we've been working to rebuild the Rainbow Alliance," he shares. "This has been a rewarding experience, as it allows us to connect with our community and provide a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQIA+ students."</span></p>
Inspiration and Advice
<p><span class="p-body">Ubillus-Rejas credits several mentors for helping guide his career path. He frequently seeks advice from Dean Marc Norman and his mentor, Mark Kostic. He also recently connected with the Office of Sustainability at NYU for further guidance in his professional journey. These relationships have been invaluable, helping him stay ahead of industry trends and navigate his career with confidence.</span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">For incoming students, Ubillus-Rejas offers this: "Reach out to your advisors and professors. Never be afraid to send an email to ask for a one-on-one meeting." He encourages students to take advantage of networking opportunities, participate in professional events, and connect with people from different industries to expand their horizons.</span></p>
