Viva Verdi! An Overview of the Great Master's Operatic Canon
The operas of Giuseppe Verdi form the essential core of the Italian canonic repertoire for the lyric stage. The enduring popularity of these works is due not only to Verdi’s ability to capture and express any human emotion by means of musical notes, but by the tumultuous history of 19th century Italy itself. These historical influences and Verdi’s unique gifts find expression in all his 39 operas, and this course, focusing on four representative operas (Macbeth, La traviata, Otello, and Falstaff) will provide the basis for the understanding and enjoyment of the Verdi canon. Joseph Colaneri, conductor, lecturer, and Music Director of The Glimmerglass Festival will provide lively commentary along with musical illustrations drawn from classic recordings by some of the great Verdi singers and conductors. Come and be prepared to be swept away by the profound sincerity, humanity, and passion of the genius of Giuseppe Verdi.
