Works of art tell stories and speak to us. Paintings have hidden meanings, but artists also incorporate words. In this course we look at how art communicates; what pictorial languages are used from Old Master paintings to Contemporary art. Rene Magritte's "This is not a pipe" and Robert Indiana's "Love" are very well known. Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Tracy Emin, Ed Ruscha, Christopher Wool and Joseph Kosuth and many others incorporate text in art. Old Master painters use symbols for complex storytelling that is often difficult to decipher. Text in art, text-based art, metaphorical meanings: we will explore how to read art.
