The Certificate in Commercial Real Estate Finance is a unique offering within the Schack Institute’s Executive Education division. This certificate is designed for the real estate industry through a partnership between the Commercial Real Estate Finance Council (CREFC) and the NYU SPS Schack Institute of Real Estate. The certificate comprises eight (8) courses total: four (4) foundational courses and four (4) electives. The courses are offered within the Schack Institute’s executive education programming. The foundational courses provide learners with critical ideas in real estate finance and economics. The elective courses assist learners in exploring the changing landscape of real estate. This certificate is offered to active CREFC members only. If you would like to become a CREFC member, please visit the CREFC website to learn more about how to join. Membership status must be vetted through CREFC before registering for these courses.

The Commercial Real Estate Finance Certificate and its courses are only open to members of CREFC. If your company is a member of CREFC, you are automatically a member.
If the company you work for is a member of CREFC, you are automatically a member. As part of the registration process, NYU will vet your membership status. Please reach out to schack.crefc@nyu.edu if you need to confirm your membership.
We offer a complementary course for CREFC members called Big Ideas. That is the only complementary course we offer.
Each fall and spring semester, we offer a course that discusses a hot topic in the commercial real estate world.
You can only apply one Big Ideas course toward the required electives and you must receive a letter grade for the course.
You will receive an email from CREFC with information on the Big Ideas course and how to sign up for it. It is typically a form to complete.
You can only apply one Big Ideas course toward the required electives and you must receive a letter grade for the course. However, you can take the course every semester as an auditor.

It’s preferable if you do, but you can still declare candidacy even after taking a course. Declaring candidacy does not commit you to completing it, but you will receive a 10% discount on future NYU SPS continuing education courses.
Assuming the course is part of the certificate, yes, but only if the course was taken within an acceptable time frame. The academic department gives students a specific amount of time to complete a certificate. The start date would be adjusted to the first class to which we applied the discount.
Yes, if a student declares candidacy for a certificate and achieves an average overall grade of B or higher in courses counting toward the certificate, they will be awarded a certificate badge upon completion, which will be shareable on their resume and LinkedIn profile.
No, continuing education courses and certificates do not qualify for financial aid.
Most continuing education programs do not count as credit toward a degree.
