Patrice Derrington Appointed Chair of Strategic Academic Initiatives at the NYU SPS Schack Institute of Real Estate
Well-Respected Real Estate Industry Expert and Educator Returns to Schack in Newly Created Program Role

<p><span class="p-body"><b>NEW YORK, NY – July 9, 2025</b> – The <a href="https://www.sps.nyu.edu/"><b>NYU School of Professional Studies (NYU SPS)</b></a> today announced that <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrice-derrington-02b3057b/" target="_blank"><b>Patrice Derrington</b></a>, a distinguished real estate expert and educator, has been appointed Chair of Strategic Academic Initiatives and a member of the Clinical Faculty team at the <a href="/content/sps-nyu/about/academic-divisions-and-departments/schack-institute-of-real-estate.html"><b>NYU SPS Schack Institute of Real Estate</b></a>, effective July, 2025. She returns to Schack, where she was an associate professor from 2012–2015.</span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">“Patrice Derrington brings a wealth of industry expertise and a track record of teaching excellence to Schack,” said Marc Norman, Larry & Klara Silverstein Chair and Associate Dean of the NYU SPS Schack Institute of Real Estate<b>.</b> “In her new role at Schack, Derrington will work closely with the program’s academic director, senior staff, full-time faculty, and myself to improve current programs and initiatives, enhance the applied learning experience, and work to prepare Schack students for careers in real estate.”</span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">Prior to joining the NYU SPS Schack Institute, Derrington led the Columbia University MS in Real Estate Development program for nine years, as the Marc Holliday Professor and Director. Most recently, she served as a lecturer and senior fellow in real estate, contributing teaching and research in the Master in Real Estate program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.</span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">“From an ever-changing economic environment to new emerging real estate technologies, today’s real estate market is constantly evolving, and can be difficult to prepare for,” said Derrington. “I look forward to being part of the NYU SPS Schack team as we create new and innovative learning experiences to help better prepare our students to take on challenges in our dynamic industry.”</span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">Over the years, Derrington has been a featured speaker at numerous industry conferences, including those hosted by Schack. Most recently, at last month’s Inaugural NYU Schack National Conference on Real Estate Development, she moderated a panel on the hottest development trends across the country and emerging development opportunities.</span></p>

<p><span class="p-body">At the core of Derrington’s scholarship is her canonical book, <i>Built Up: An Historical Perspective on the Contemporary Principles and Practices of Real Estate Development</i> (2021, Routledge), recently followed by the June 2024 publication of <i>20+ Years of Urban Rebuilding: Lessons from the Revival of Lower Manhattan after 9/11</i> (Routledge).</span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">With a Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley and Harvard MBA, Derrington gained over 20-years of “Wall Street” experience in restructuring defaulted real estate debt and syndicating property investments, managing private equity funds for major individual and institutional clients, and as a Vice President of the New York State’s Lower Manhattan Development Corporation formulating the $20B Economic Revitalization Strategy for the recovery of New York City after the devastation of Sept 11th, 2001.</span></p>
