PWM's Stephen J. McConnell Talks Reimagining Workflow Through AI

Advances in AI are prompting a seismic shift at the very core of the publishing, media, and communications industries. NYU SPS Center for Publishing, Writing, and Media AI Program Coordinator Stephen J. McConnell describes this transformation as "a structural reorganization of how work is done.”

"AI is changing communication-product creation and development from the ground up, while substantially improving quality and productivity," he says.

“AI platforms are reshaping what a single communicator can accomplish in a single day. The professionals who internalize these developments will be highly valuable and occupy the cutting edge of the next era of communications work.”

“The temptation, though, when faced with that kind of structural change is to automate as much as possible, as fast as possible,” he adds.

McConnell, who teaches in the Center’s AI for Creative and Professional Practice program, emphasizes that over-automation can produce work that is “technically competent, yet strategically hollow. Communications that lack judgment, context, and relational intelligence can be the difference between noise and authenticity.”

The real imperative is to design your relationship with AI deliberately, to understand precisely where it belongs in your workflow and where it doesn’t.”

"That's the animating idea behind the AI curriculum we've built at the NYU SPS Center for Publishing, Writing, and Media. Communications & AI and Introduction to AI build fluency," says McConnell, a former enterprise journalist and owner of a digital marketing company, who earned a PhD in Public Communication and Technology from Colorado State University.

Students learn to direct AI tools rather than be directed by them. AI Foundations focuses on hands-on productivity workflows. Visual Design & AI addresses the visual aspects of communication that are increasingly part of our world today.

And Advanced AI & Communications is where students work through end-to-end automation design, ethics, and the professional judgment questions that no tool can answer for you: knowing when to hold AI back is as consequential as knowing when to deploy it.

“A conductor must know the music before leading the orchestra," says McConnell. "The curriculum is designed around that principle. Technical fluency in service of professional judgment, not a replacement for it."
