The NYU SPS Center for Global Affairs (CGA) and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) have released the African Wars in the 21st Century Workshop Report 2025, a practitioner-focused synthesis from a high-level convening held July 1–2, 2025, at the African Union (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa. Co-organized with the Joint Civil-Military Interaction (JCMI) Research and Education Network, the workshop brought together over 30 African scholars, policymakers, civil society leaders, AU Commission staff, military professionals, and international development practitioners to translate the AU’s revised Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD) framework into actionable strategies.

Four CGA attendees stand in front of a sign that reads, 'Silencing the Guns in Africa.'

The report captures how participants worked across disciplines to generate people-centered, context-specific solutions that prioritize legitimacy, inclusion, and resilience over short-term fixes. By focusing on the operationalization of the AU’s PCRD policy at national, regional, and continental levels, the workshop underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration as essential for building durable recovery and advancing sustainable peace across Africa.

The report has been formally submitted to the AU along with practical briefs and will be presented during the AU’s PCRD Awareness Week in November.
