The article was published on July 25, 2024

Associate Dean at the Center for Global Affairs and the Founding Director of the ECJS Lab, Carolyn Kissane, hosted the AIR Scholars, a group of Brooklyn high school students passionate about climate issues. The AIR Scholars program, championed by AIR Company, aims to build a community of youth, academia, and innovators committed to creating a more sustainable, just, and equitable future.

Based in Brooklyn, AIR Company focuses on converting CO2 into aviation fuel and other resources. The company sponsors the AIR Scholar programs which is structured as a summer internship, engaging high school students from historically disadvantaged communities. Led by Dr. Jesse John, a Geochemistry PhD and high school educator, along with Professor Carolyn Kissane, the program provides students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge sustainability practices.

The AIR Scholars program was first piloted in the summer of 2022 to raise awareness about the unequal distribution of climate burdens affecting communities of color and low-income households. These communities have long been subjected to racial discrimination in housing and zoning, forcing them to live near environmental hazards such as toxic waste facilities and incinerators. As a New York-based company, AIR Company recognizes the historic underinvestment and pollution that certain areas in Brooklyn face due to industrial siting policies. Through the AIR Scholars program, the company is dedicated to empowering these communities with a voice and the necessary tools for environmental justice.

During their visit, the scholars engaged in enriching discussions with Professor Carolyn Kissane and graduate students focusing on energy and environmental policy. The Air Scholars were given the opportunity to ask questions, leading to a focused conversation about energy, climate justice, and various career pathways.

Beyond the academic discussions, the Air Scholars were eager to learn about the college experience. The team shared personal insights about life at NYU and what makes it special. The visit concluded with a campus tour, showcasing some favorite NYU highlights.
