Q: Can you describe your internship role and what a typical day looked like?
A: As a Flextrip travel writing Intern, I write 2-3 articles per week about destination activities for college students adventuring abroad. Whether it be Moroccan desert adventures or the best late night eats in London, I am researching getaways all over the world, then using SEO and trend analysis to craft copy. On a typical day, I will generate article topics with the team, do solo research, monitor the best SEO practices, conduct timely trend analysis, write a few rough drafts, attend team meetings, and eventually edit and revise my work into final versions.

Q: How did the MSPW program help prepare you for this internship?
A: The MS in Professional Writing (MSPW) program prepared me for this opportunity by exposing me to a wide range of writing subgenres and giving me the confidence to tackle unfamiliar topics with ease. Through the guidance of great professors, I’ve developed strong research skills that allow me to source credible, ethically grounded information. The MSPW also offered flexibility in pursuing external professional writing opportunities, which eased any stress during my internship search. And, I knew that if I couldn’t secure a placement, the Directed Study option would always be available.

Q: What were some of the biggest things you learned/are learning during your internship?
A: One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned so far is that strong research is necessary. In today’s complex digital world, there is tons of false information and alternative motives. Researchers must browse with caution. Checking citations, evaluating credibility, and cross-verifying information across multiple sources are all valuable tactics that I lean on daily.

Q:How important is collaboration in your internship role, and who do you work closely with?
A. At Flextrip, collaboration is key. The company is young and the team are all young professionals, so when all of our youthfully ambitious minds come together to talk business, it's powerful. I work closely with the rest of the internship team, there's three of us. We bounce ideas back and forth and critique each other's work in a healthy, constructive manner. Overall, this position is a great fit because I get to combine two heartfelt passions: traveling and writing.
