Wallace Stegner (1909-1993) is considered to be one of the most accomplished writers from the western part of the country. Stegner’s achievement as writer and teacher in both fiction and nonfiction made him one of the most impressive talents in American literature. His works are intense, focused, and revelatory of characters, settings, and situations. In his gripping and reflective fiction, Stegner explores the end of the frontier, the dangers of economic exploitation and environmental destruction, the fraudulent relationships between men and women, and the responsibility of the individual self in the world of systems. We will read his three remarkable late works, published in his sixties and seventies: Angle of Repose (two sessions), The Spectator Bird, and Crossing to Safety.
