Fresh off the heels of this year’s Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, seize the opportunity to gain a comprehensive view of how international sport operates—and why its governance matters for athletes, nations, and fans worldwide, with particular focus placed upon the Olympic Movement and the International Olympic Committee’s role as a cornerstone of international sport.

Learn How Power Dynamics Shape Global Sport Governance

Take a deep dive into the Olympic Movement and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), exploring how the IOC functions as the central node in international sport, influencing everything from athlete eligibility to global event hosting. Delve into why it remains the most powerful force in international sport and how its decisions ripple across federations, governments, and global audiences.

Untangle the complex web of stakeholders that define international sport, including national Olympic committees, international federations, governments, sponsors, broadcasters, and athletes. Analyze how these actors negotiate influence through diplomacy, financial structures, and modern governance practices. Develop a nuanced view of sport as a global system where governance choices carry cultural, economic, and geopolitical weight.

Gain an Insider’s Perspective of the Global Sport Arena

The course culminates in a group project that analyzes an assigned international sport federation, prompting participants to investigate the organization’s history, governance structure, and management practices, and identify the major challenges it faces today. Each group studies a different federation, empowering the class as a whole to benefit from peer‑to‑peer learning and comparative insights into how governance models vary across sports.

Olympic Sport Governance, taught by adjunct instructor Chrysostomos Giannoulakis, provides in-depth analysis of key stakeholders and power dynamics within the global sporting landscape. By examining international relations, financial structures, and modern governance, students gain a holistic understanding of how sport is organized globally, extending their perspective beyond the traditional North American model.
