Interviews and Profiles
Interviewing is the most fundamental skill in journalism. In this course, you will become familiar with the best practices for interviewing, gathering sources, verifying facts, choosing and attributing quotes, crafting story ideas, pitching, and marketing your content via social media. Learn to conduct effective interviews, fashion them into articles, and place them for publication in newspapers and magazines. Topics include selecting a subject, researching an idea and an interviewee (whether a family member or a celebrity), dealing with spokespeople and publicists, preparing for an interview, applying interviewing styles and techniques, and pitching your story. Writing assignments are based on actual interviews.
This course may be used to fulfill the requirements of the Certificate in Journalism. It may be taken to pursue this certificate, or as a standalone course. Questions? Contact us at The Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts: Email sps.pala.ce@nyu.edu or call 212-998-7289.
