Museum and Cultural Organization Leadership in the 21st Century

This course focuses on the key competencies needed to lead museums and related cultural institutions that exhibit and manage collections. We will examine the museum leader’s role in operations, collections, fundraising, and governance. Students will learn about approaches to inclusiveness and relevancy in museums as well as the challenges faced in the current social and political climate. As part of this course, students will conduct field research and engage with the instructor and other students in live class sessions on Zoom that will be recorded for those who are unable to attend.

This course may be used to fulfill the requirements of the Certificate in Arts Management.

This course is delivered in an online format that uses a combination of real-time, instructor-led (synchronous) video meetings and self-paced (asynchronous) learning within NYU’s online learning platform, and there are weekly deadlines for lesson and assignment completion.
