An Editorial 360: Navigating the World of Magazine Editing

One key to a successful career in publishing is thorough knowledge of the various roles an editor can play, as well as the flexibility to assume all these roles. Although larger magazine publishers might offer distinct positions for each job function, in this day and age, smaller publications typically look for a jack-of-all-trades who can wear many hats, often all at once. This course can help you to become an expert in all things editing, from the overarching process to tough grammar quandaries. Learn to look at manuscripts with a content editor’s broad perspective, a copy editor’s precision, and a researcher’s accuracy. You’ll work together in groups to edit your own magazine, and guest speakers will lend insight on how to thrive in the field. Most important, this class will enable you to pinpoint which career path in publishing you’d like to pursue—and where you want your name to appear on a magazine’s masthead.
