Managing a Major Gift Program for a Nonprofit Organization

Major gifts have significant impact on nonprofit organizations by allowing them to provide new programming, build or improve the physical plant, or enhance current operations. Whether your organization is a small shop or a larger nonprofit, the management of the major gift operation is critical to success in securing the major gifts. This course will discuss the solicitation process, management tools such as moves management, prospect research, and identification of the top-25 to top-100 major prospects. Managers are responsible for the confidential information developed about potential contributors; as such, the ethical and law-related aspects of confidential information will be discussed. The board of directors or trustees also are critical players in the solicitation of major gifts, and the course will focus on the partnership between fundraisers and board members. Management of the major gifts program also involves training, mentoring, and evaluating the major gift staff, which also will be covered.
