The certificate is a series of five continuing education courses. You do not need to apply for the program - you can simply register for each course. When starting the program, you can declare your candidacy for the Certificate in Vocology, which will give you a 10% discount on courses, among other benefits.
FAQ for the NYU SPS Vocology Certificate Program
When should I start the application process?
What qualifications or prerequisites are required?
The only real qualification is an interest in learning more about the multidisciplinary study of the voice!
Do I need to have up-to-date math skills to successfully accomplish the courses?
In Fundamentals of Vocology we will discuss biomechanical concepts related to the physics of voice production, but you will not need math skills to complete the work.
Is there an order I should take the classes?
Fundamentals of Vocology is recommended as the first course in the program but is not required to be so.
When will the certificate courses be offered?
Beginning in fall of 2023, all five courses will be available over the course of a calendar year (two courses each fall/spring/summer semester). The annual schedule is as follows:
Fall
- Vocometry: Measuring and Analyzing the Voice
- Overview of Assessment and Management of Voice Disorders
Spring
Summer
How long does it take to earn the certificate?
You could complete the certificate in as little as one year, if you take two courses a semester. If you take one course a semester, you can complete the course in under two years (5 semesters). The certificate must be completed within three years of taking the first certificate-eligible course.
I don't live near NYU–can I still take classes?
Yes, absolutely! The program was designed specifically to make vocology education more accessible, which is why it is entirely online.
I'm a busy professional–what sort of workload should I expect?
Each class meets synchronously once a week for one hour over Zoom. Additionally, there are 1-2 hours of asynchronous material (reading and videos) each week plus studying and homework. The program is designed to be rigorous, but also accessible.
How much should I expect to spend on the entire course?
The current tuition for each class is listed on the registration page for that class (see links above). Based on pricing in the 2023-2024 academic year, the entire program is projected to cost under $5000. Tuition prices are subject to annual increases.
