Student Club Spotlight: Hospitality Business Society (HBS)

The Hospitality Business Society is the undergraduate student club for the Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality. The club’s president, Sabrina Urban, talks about her experience at NYU and her objectives for the club.

What brought you to the BS in Hotel and Tourism Management?

In my junior year of high school, I was still very unsure exactly what I wanted to pursue but had an interest in the business world. I went to tour the NYU campus that summer and was looking through the NYU brochure when I saw the Hotel and Tourism Management major. Right when I saw it, I knew I had to begin my research into a hospitality career. I ended up reaching out to the Tisch Center my senior year where they let me meet with a few students at the time and hear their perspectives. Between the location, amazing faculty, positive student feedback, and just the atmosphere I felt when touring the Tisch Center - I knew that this program was right for me.

What are the objectives of HBS, and what kind of programming will the club offer this fall?

Hospitality Business Society serves as a resource to connect our student members with New York’s dominant hospitality industry through various events and initiatives, which span the realms of education, community service, career advancement, industry relations, and social networking. This fall, we are back to offering in-person events and will be re-launching our tours in NYC. We will be touring the Moxy East Village, HMG+, Cote, and many more to come. We also will be having our concentration panel to hear from senior students about how their concentration has impacted their learning and career goals. Our goal is to bring back in-person networking as much as possible to make up for the lost time. Stay tuned for more events!

What are your personal goals for your time as HBS President?

As HBS President, I want to tap into my leadership skills and create a sense of community within our club. I joined HBS my freshmen year and had the opportunity to be Secretary last year on the Executive Board. I additionally had the amazing opportunity to take the University Leadership Honors Course last year which taught me many skills necessary to lead a team. Therefore, I am bringing together my skillset from both of these experiences and finally get to apply it in order to be the best leader I can be. This year, I want to learn from my mistakes and challenge my strengths so when I enter the workforce next year, I already will know how to improve myself as a leader. I am so excited to meet all our new members and make this year one for growth, friendships, networking, and more.

How can students get involved in HBS?

There are SO many ways to be involved in HBS. Make sure to sign up for our roster on the NYU engage website or by emailing sps.hbs.club@nyu.edu. This will keep students up to date with all our current events. Also follow us on social media: Instagram @nyuhbs Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NYUHBS LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/school/nyu-hbs. We will be having a few Executive Board positions opening up in the spring, feel free to reach out if you are interested!

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I am truly looking forward to an amazing year with HBS alongside my great Executive Board. We are so grateful to be back in person this year and won't take any opportunity for granted. I recommend new students to attend as many events as possible to not only see what they enjoy but meet more fellow classmates. I am beyond excited for the rest of the year!
