Do you struggle with writing, researching, and presenting your ideas? Have you ever wanted to write and design material that captivates an audience or offer a persuasive perspective to colleagues?

In this new accelerated certificate program that weaves together tried-and-true communication techniques and artificial intelligence technologies, Stephen J. McConnell, PhD will help you become a better writer, workplace communicator, and researcher so you can more quickly attain your goals.

Held on the campus of New York University in New York City, this intensive two-week certificate course, Communications & AI, will introduce you to popular, cutting edge, and niche communication-focused AI models, as well as teach you fundamental writing, research, presentation, and digital marketing techniques.

Overall, you will learn critical strategies that will aid your writing and communication projects and utilize select and quality AI models best suited to enhance and accelerate this work.

Moving beyond prompt engineering, Stephen will also offer frameworks to help you engage in more intentional dialogues with AI, where AI can be utilized not only to critique and improve your work but also to learn from AI, ultimately helping you to take your writing and communication craft to the next level.

Each class will include in-person instruction and mentoring from Stephen, hands-on work with AI software, and assignment practice opportunities.

Stephen’s Bio:

Stephen J. McConnell, PhD, is an award-winning teacher and AI researcher who co-developed the certificate in Communications and AI for the university.

Stephen has given keynotes on AI and communication work and offered his perspectives on the technology as a panelist at prominent academic conferences throughout the U.S. 

Previously a journalist and owner of a marketing company, in the classroom Stephen blends his professional experiences in writing and communication work with his research on AI. That research examines how we can best empower the technology to assist our goals, skills, and learning.

Stephen earned a Ph.D. in Public Communication and Technology from Colorado State University, where he started teaching in 2017. In 2024, he received NYU's Teaching Excellence Award.

An NYU SPS alum, he has taught AI, storytelling, and communication courses at the university. He earned an M.S. in Professional Writing from NYU SPS, and a B.S. in English from Radford University in 2005.
