Introduction to Ghostwriting
One of the least known but fastest growing segments of the publishing industry is the field of ghostwriting. Thanks in large part to the convergence of two trend lines —the democratization of publishing across all platforms combined with the massive premium being placed on thought leadership across most industries — demand for reliable, high-quality book collaborators is surging. As a result, opportunities to make a healthy living as a ghost are rapidly expanding. In fact, the first ever large-scale survey of ghostwriters conducted in 2024 found that one-third of the 269 respondents reported earning more than $100,000 in annual income from book collaborations. Not coincidentally, the old stigmas around ghostwriting are rapidly disappearing, with many prominent authors not just publicly acknowledging but embracing their writing partners. All of which explains why more and more established authors and journalists — including brand names like J.R. Moehringer and Ariel Levy — are rushing to embrace the identity of collaborator. Yet at the same time, while the profession is in the process of coming out of the shadows, it still remains an inaccessible black box to most outside of the publishing industry. This class offers a deep-dive primer on the ghostwriting profession that will demystify how it works and examine what it takes to succeed.
