Baroque Masterpieces at the Met
The Metropolitan Museum of Art showcases a stunning collection of Baroque masterpieces, including works by renowned artists such as Caravaggio, Bernini, Velazquez, and Vermeer. The Baroque was a period of great artistic innovation and experimentation, when artists pushed the limits of traditional techniques and styles to create bold and dynamic works that continue to captivate audiences today. Before we dive into the opulence and drama of seventeenth-century Baroque paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts at the Met, four classroom lectures will cover the major currents of Baroque art in Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and France. We will also look at the distinct visual cultures that emerged from the fusion of indigenous and European artistic traditions in the Americas during the Baroque era. Our goal is to gain a better understanding of the cultural and historical contexts that influenced the Baroque style and learn to appreciate its long-term impact on Western art and beyond. A special section will be devoted to female Baroque artists, including Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1653), Judith Leyster (1609–1660), and Elisabetta Sirani (1638-1665).
