While the NYUSPS Schack Institute of Real Estate's degree programs provide immersive education for a long-term career path in commerical real estate, our continuing education division offers opportunities for professionals to take advantage of individual career advancement courses, as well as certificates that deliver broad knowledge in a specific topic area to advance your career track in the real estate and construction industry. 

Whether you are an individual seeking an introductory foundation to a subject, a professional who would like to improve your aptitude and skills that are integral to remaining competitive in the job market, or a career-changer seeking in-depth knowledge in a specific subject, we offer a variety of educational options that serve your goals.

Certificates generally consist of two foundation courses and three to four electives.  Currently we offer certificates in the following areas:

Real Estate Investment

The Certificate in Real Estate Investment provides a foundational understanding of real estate investment principles and techniques, as well as a broad overview of types of investible real estate and markets. Students who complete this certificate will gain an understanding of investment decision-making, deal analysis, and real estate investment markets, thus better preparing them for careers in the field.

This certificate consists of two (2) required courses and four(4) electives.

Real Estate Capital Markets

The Certificate in Real Estate Capital Markets provides a foundational understanding of debt and equity markets and their use in financing successful real estate acquisitions or developments. Students who complete this certificate will gain an understanding of the nature and function of real estate capital markets, the process of loan and equity investment issuance, and the tools used by lenders and analysts when underwriting deals, thus better preparing them for careers in the field.

This certificate consists of two (2) required courses and four (4) electives.

CREFC Real Estate Finance

The Certificate in Commercial Real Estate Finance is a unique offering within the Schack Institute’s Executive Education division. This certificate is designed for the real estate industry through a partnership between the Commercial Real Estate Finance Council (CREFC) and the NYU SPS Schack Institute of Real Estate. The certificate comprises eight (8) courses total: four (4) foundational courses and four (4) electives. The courses are offered within the Schack Institute’s executive education programming. The foundational courses provide learners with critical ideas in real estate finance and economics. The elective courses assist learners in exploring the changing landscape of real estate. This certificate is offered to active CREFC members only. If you would like to become a CREFC member, please visit the CREFC website to learn more about how to join. Membership status must be vetted through CREFC before registering for these courses.

Development and Land Use

This Certificate in Development and Land Use will give a foundational understanding of the legal and regulatory environment of development activities, as well as a basic overview of the development process and development financing. Students who complete this certificate will gain an understanding of how land use and regulation affect new development, what it takes to make a development ready for approval, and how development is financed. These skills will prepare students for careers in the field.

The Certificate is comprised of two (2) required courses and four (4) electives.

Affordable Housing

The Certificate in Affordable Housing is designed for real estate industry professionals looking to branch into or deepen understanding of the affordable housing market. An understanding of affordable housing policy, finance and development is becoming a crucial skill for real estate professionals in every aspect of the market.  Provision of affordable housing at various tiers is required for most large scale mixed use development and contributes to a healthy, equitable, sustainable city.  Financing affordable housing involves public private partnerships and layered financing.  Knowledge of this industry gives professionals in investment, development, management and construction a unique standing in deepening or changing careers in real estate.

The Certificate is comprised of six (6) courses total including three (3) foundational courses.

Data Analytics

This Certificate in Real Estate Data Analytics provides a foundational understanding of real estate data sources, as well as the use of applied machine learning to drive real estate investment and development decisions. Students who complete this certificate will gain an understanding of real-world real estate data and the algorithms that can be deployed to make informed, data-driven decisions, thus better preparing them for careers in the field.

Commerical Property Management

The Certificate in Commercial Property Management introduces you to the world of real estate from the operations perspective, providing you with the skills to manage commercial office buildings on a day-to-day basis on behalf of property owners. Learn about newly established COVID-19 guidelines that focus on tenant safety. Gain a deep understanding of tenant relations, client service, building systems and operations, and employee management. Explore the unique roles and responsibilities of a property manager, including how best to position properties to maximize investment return and profit. Acquire the basic skills of learning to read and administer leases and maintaining property/building systems to maximize their economic life.

This certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete the four required courses and one elective within two years of taking the first certificate-eligible course.

Residential Property Management

The Certificate in Residential Property Management introduces you to real estate investment concepts and property management principles for residential buildings. The residential housing market is booming, with a greater need for professionals who can manage property safely and efficiently. Learn how to market properties, negotiate and execute leases, manage staff, and handle human resource issues. Gain a comprehensive understanding of day-to-day operations of the property, including maintenance and other service contracts, while learning how to address risk management, safety, health issues, and insurance concerns as related to COVID-19. Develop the sought-after skills to evaluate and improve the financial performance of residential real estate property assets. This highly interactive program of study includes guest lectures by industry professionals and hands-on projects that provide real-world examples. This certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete the four required foundation courses and one elective within two years of taking the first certificate-eligible course.

Buildings & Construction

This Certificate in Buildings and Construction provides students with an understanding of the current technologies and methods in building construction, systems, and technologies used to manage and maintain built structures. Students also gain an overview of the management of construction processes, which helps to prepare them for careers in the field.

This certificate is awarded to those who successfully complete the two (2) required courses and four (4) electives.

Building Design: Plumbing

The Certificate in Building Design: Plumbing covers the current methods and technologies utilized in plumbing systems, including how to manage and maintain them. These highly acclaimed courses are taught by experienced instructors and offer new and seasoned professionals the opportunity to review fundamental and complex concepts related to the practice of building design and plumbing systems.
