We invite faculty to visit our Events and Workshops page and to check back at frequent intervals as we continually update and enrich our offerings. Review our events and workshops for in-person and online faculty development opportunities that are held throughout the year, providing flexible and varied professional development designed to appeal to the diverse needs and preferences of our faculty.

We are offering numerous faculty development opportunities as part of our Year in Faculty Excellence programming series and all events and workshops are open to all full-time and adjunct faculty and academic staff at NYU SPS. Workshops are offered in in-person, online (asynchronous), and webinar formats.

As we approach the Fall term, we will be offering an in-person workshop that will assist faculty with preparing their NYU Classes course sites for the fall term. This in-person offering will be held in a computer lab.

This asynchronous, online course will guide you through an examination of your course goals and the alignment of high-impact assignments and assessments.

Pulling it all Together: Shaping Your Syllabus to Meet Your Objectives

Whether you’re teaching for the first time or have taught the same course for several years, revisit your syllabus in time to submit it to your department. This asynchronous, online course will invite you to use what you learned in Course Goals, Assignments and Assessments and Classroom Practice to reflect on your current syllabus. (Note: This is a stand-alone course; you do not need to take Course Goals, Assignments and Assessments or Classroom Practice to take this course.)

Explore the Possibilities: A Virtual Scan of the New Tech Tools at NYU

This virtual workshop will provide faculty with a brief overview and simple use cases for new tools that NYU will be piloting this fall.  These tools include class polling, a learning management system for writing intensive courses, a robust testing too for high-stakes summative assessments, and a content authoring platform.

Preparing NYU Classes for the Fall Term

This in-person workshop will be held in a computer lab and will guide faculty through building their NYU Classes course site to maximizes their student’s learning experience, while lowering the learning curve for faculty. Faculty are encouraged to bring their syllabus and course materials on a thumbdrive or to access them through Google Drive.

Taking the Next Step: Preparing the NYU Classes Gradebook

The Gradebook is an integrated element in NYU Classes that helps instructors track, manage, and grade assignments for their class. This module will help instructors get started with their Gradebook and will provide an overview of its structure, content, and how assignments are linked to it. This module is most appropriate for new instructors, or those in need of a refresher in Gradebook use.

Going Beyond the Traditional: Using Zoom and NYU Stream Capture to Connect with Your Students

Our students live in a visual technology enhanced world. They connect with their peers through FaceTime, Instagram and Twitter.  This virtual workshop will provide you with simple strategies for using two tools to add video to your courses. Connect with your students for online office hours through Zoom or respond to an email question with a short easy to create video with NYU Stream Capture.

Painting a Complete Picture: Integrating ePortfolio into Your Class

ePortfolios enable students to self-assess, to monitor and to evaluate their learning progress, to think critically and actively about their learning processes and to take ownership of their work -- all of which enhance meaningful, long-term learning. ePortfolios are student-curated online collections of their own work tied together by self-reflective writing and thoughtful design. This workshop will provide an overview of the new CourseNetworking ePortfolio tool and a deep exploration of strategies for successful implementation.

Topics on deadlines and reporting through the Albert Student Information System will be addressed. This module is most appropriate for instructors who have used Gradebook throughout the term, or those in need of a refresher.

Crafting a Learner - centered Syllabus

A high-quality syllabus is an indicator of the teaching and learning that will take place in a course. It is a contract that outlines course expectations, outcomes and methods of assessmen. Whether you are building your syllabus for the first time or you would like to revise an existing syllabus, this interactive, online, fully asynchronous course will guide you through syllabus creation.

It is estimated that those who wish to take part in all activities will spend about 5 hours on task. Those who complete all discussion and a final assignment will receive a certificate of completion.

Connecting Career and Classroom

At SPS, we want to ensure students successfully learn how to navigate the cyclical process of career management that includes self-assessment, market assessment, exploration and decision-making, taking action, managing, and relationship building throughout their careers. As faculty, you have an opportunity to shape how students enter the world of work, advance their careers, and embody the SPS mission of creating future leaders in a global economy. This session will provide faculty with awareness of students’ career-based pain points; reframe and renegotiate definitions of career success; and identify tactics for leveraging assignments and classroom activities to address pain points and position students for continued career success.

Creative Alternatives to the Research Paper

The traditional research essay is a valuable part of assessment in college classes. However, many instructors are beginning to use more creative assessments that still use writing as a core component. This workshop will focus on the use, creation, and implementation of creative assessments beyond the essay such as podcasting and the Unessay as well as guidelines for creating and grading these types of assignments.

Gamification Webinar

Gamification is the use of game elements in non-game contexts. You can definitely use games for learning. But how do you get started? There are a few elements of gamification you can begin using in your classes.
