NEW YORK, October 7, 2013—Teams from both the undergraduate and graduate programs of the Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management of the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies (NYU-SCPS) will compete in the NYU 2013 Diamond Dollars Baseball Case Competition, sponsored by YarcData, on Friday, Nov. 22 at NYU's Kimmel Center.
Teams of undergraduate and graduate students, representing colleges and universities from around the country are expected at this year's Competition, which is a partnership between the NYU-SCPS Tisch Center and Vince Gennaro, who is a consultant to Major League Baseball (MLB) teams and the author of "Diamond Dollars: The Economics of Winning in Baseball" (Potomac Books, 2007). Several days prior to the Competition, Gennaro will provide the teams with a case that reflects the types of complex decisions faced by MLB general managers, such as a free agent signing, a key roster move, or a trade decision. The teams then present their case recommendations to a panel of judges comprised of MLB team executives and members of the media.
There will be added drama at this year's competition. All eyes will be on the NYU-SCPS Tisch Center's undergraduate team, which won the Society for American Baseball Research's Case Competition at the SABR Analytics Conference in Phoenix last March.
"This year's Competition is shaping up to be the most exciting one yet," said Wayne McDonnell, clinical associate professor of Sports Management at the NYU-SCPS Tisch Center. "Our undergraduate team needs to defend its SABR Case Competition championship, while our graduate team looks formidable. Both of them will have their work cut out for them as they face the best and the brightest aspiring baseball scholars from some of the most elite schools in the country."
"The Diamond Dollars Case Competition provides an opportunity for students to apply their critical thinking skills to real issues facing a baseball general manager and to showcase those skills to MLB executives," said Gennaro.
Colleges and universities that are interested in entering a student team in the event should contact Vince Gennaro at firstname.lastname@example.org or register online at http://www.vincegennaro.com/nyucasecompetition.html. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 25.
