Two Novels by Fyodor Dostoevsky: Crime and Punishment and the Brothers Karamazov

Register for this Fall 2023 course on the new NYU SPS Academy of Lifelong Learning website. Dostoyevsky’s two most famous novels revealed a Russian society riven morally and politically and aflame with the passions of a frustrated modernity. Dostoyevsky was of several minds about many things, and his novels masterfully display this ambivalence as they explore the conventions of love, greed, and revolution. But they also reveal the novelist’s unparalleled grasp of psychological subtlety and expertly capture his characters’ feelings of fear, guilt, joy, and salvation. Reading the recent, acclaimed translations by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, we will see how novels immersed in the context of one hundred and fifty years ago are still resonant in the vital present.

Fall 2023 tuition is $499.
Registering at least three weeks prior to the course start date is highly recommended.
