The Global Economy and Financial Markets: Making Sense of News Headlines
Register for this course on the NYU SPS Academy of Lifelong Learning website.
Deciphering economic and financial terminology can be challenging but is critical to understanding how the global markets work. This course gets behind news headlines to develop basic knowledge of macroeconomics, financial markets, and international political economy in order to understand the important issues contained in news reports in publications such as The Economist and the FT. Taking current news stories found in the financial press as a starting point, we may cover current issues in: monetary and fiscal policy; inflation, interest rates, exchange rates and reserve currencies; trade, financial flows, and the balance of payments; banking systems, event risk, and the risks of investing across borders. Timely topics covered by financial journalists will be discussed against the backdrop of core economic and financial concepts.
