The Global Economy and Financial Markets: Making Sense of News Headlines
Deciphering economic and financial terminology can be challenging but is critical to understanding how the global markets work. This course gets behind news headlines to develop basic knowledge of macroeconomics, financial markets, and international political economy in order to understand the important issues contained in publications such as The Economist
and the Financial Times
.
We will consider the impact of the shift in economic policies underway in the incoming US administration on the global economy -- including tariffs, tax cuts, and other America First policies. We will look at economic policy actions and reactions around the globe and what this might mean for global growth, inflation, and other economic developments. Timely topics covered by financial journalists will be discussed against the backdrop of core economic and financial concepts.
