Attracting Sponsors for Niche Sports

Sponsorship is the lifeblood of many sporting organizations, and it has a critical impact on the image of the sport. Attracting sponsorship support, therefore, is a major task of the niche sports manager. Niche sports include sports such as lacrosse, bull riding, volleyball, fencing, canoeing, and ultimate Frisbee, to name a few, but exclude the major sports such as American football, basketball, ice hockey, baseball, stock car auto racing, golf, and tennis. Niche sports often are able to offer sponsors unique benefits that mainstream sports are unable or unwilling to provide, such as cost effectiveness, more-targeted fan bases, decreased sponsorship clutter, and flexibility. This course identifies the selection criteria that sponsors deem important when evaluating niche sport sponsorship opportunities.
