Nietzsche: His Controversial Legacy

The 19th-century German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, has alternately been seen as the high priest of postmodernism, a proto-Nazi, an ethical genius, and a prophet of nihilism. In this course, explore the work of this important figure who continues to exert an influence on contemporary writers and thinkers. We look at his writings on tragedy, Socrates, and Jesus, and we examine his roles as social critic, polemicist, and visionary madman. The course features intensive readings and discussions of some of his works.
