Plays with a Social Conscience

Examine how eight well-known playwrights bring moving, memorable stories to the stage and illuminate the injustices evident in cultures and communities. Issues of gender, race, and class are given special focus. We will read Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, Caryl Churchill’s Cloud Nine, Charles Fuller’s A Soldier’s Play, Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart, Athol Fugard’s My Children! My Africa!, and Dominique Morisseau’s Skeleton Crew. Active participation in class discussion is encouraged.
