Autobiography and Memoir: Inside the Heart and Soul of Another

Great autobiographies are powerful evocations not just of a person but of a time and place. They transport us inside the skin of another to experience events, people, and the world just as their authors did. Exposing life’s desires and vulnerabilities with grace and wit, these first-person stories haunt readers long after the last page. Selected portions of books, essays, and films will transport us to an artist’s garret, trenches of war, a joyful childhood in Egypt, the life of daring woman in Paris, and the life of a black man in modern America, as well as look back with humorists to the perils of old age. The books, which are not required reading, include memoirs by Vincent van Gogh, Julia Child, Robert Graves, Michael Herr, James Baldwin, Vladimir Nabokov, André Aciman, Nora Ephron, David Sedaris, and Roger Angell.
