Creative Writing Workshop: Finding the Truth in Fiction

Whether you’re a fan of realistic fiction, like novels by the writers Angie Thomas (The Hate U Give) and Nicola Yoon (Everything, Everything), or dystopian fantasies by writers like Victoria Aveyard (Red Queen) and Sarah J. Maas (A Court of Thorns and Roses), you know that powerful stories inspired by real life and/or real emotions can come in many shapes and sizes. Whether characters are walking the halls of their high school or starting a political revolution, their everyday decisions can be life-altering, overwhelming, and even exhilarating. In this workshop, read and discuss a variety of fiction—autobiographical, humorous, satirical, fantastical, and illustrated stories—and discuss what resonates as true. Then, put pen to paper and write your own. Each week, we will examine different techniques that are fundamental to all forms of fiction, focusing on story structure, character development, description, and dialogue. By participating in interactive writing exercises, discussing the works of published authors, and sharing writing with your peers, you will complete a polished short story inspired by emotions, events, people, or places in your life by the end of the course. The final session will include an afternoon of literary reading, which friends and parents are welcome to attend.
