Independent Digital Documentary Filmmaking: From Researching and Writing to Producing and Directing

Examine the roles, responsibilities, and skills needed to become an independent digital documentary filmmaker, including finding and researching your story and developing a documentary proposal. Learn about the history of documentary filmmaking; its many different styles, from expository to poetic; and the ways in which new technology, from the digital camera to the iPhone, has changed the genre. Examine how these evolving technologies and new distribution platforms have become important parts of a filmmaker’s tool kit when creating independent documentary films. Explore the use of traditional production frameworks, and learn how it can be applied to today’s digital storytelling and modern distribution. All phases of documentary filmmaking, from writing a treatment and budgeting to pitching investors and distributing the final product, will be covered.
