Buon Appetito! Food and Italian Cinema

Following Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin’s famous aphorism, “Tell me what you eat, and I’ll tell you what you are,” this course explores how food can be a window into culture, history, and communication. We will watch a variety of Italian and Italian-American films in which food is a particularly compelling protagonist—from Food (Rusca, 2012) and Focaccia Blues (Cirasola, 2009) to Benvenuti al Sud (Welcome to the South, Miniero, 2010), from Pranzo di Ferragosto (Mid-August Lunch, Di Gregorio, 2008) to Maccheroni (Macaroni, Scola, 1985), from Big Night (Tucci, 1996) to Ladri di Biciclette (The Bicycle Thief, De Sica, 1948). Through these films, both feature and documentary, we will explore issues of waste, globalization, class, and identity, as well as the Italian national relationship to food.
