Movie Writing "with" the Coen Brothers
Okay, there are quotation marks around with in the course title because we’re not really going to be in a room with Joel and Ethan Coen, just their movies and screenplays. This course is part-film appreciation and part-screenwriting inspiration. Each week, we will analyze a movie by the Coens and then complete a writing exercise inspired by the film. Topics include premise, character, plot, dialogue, theme, and expanding genres. Whether you’re interested in writing a comedy, a suspenseful thriller, or a madcap romp, there’s a Coen film to inspire and guide you. There are many great Coen films to choose from, but those we’ll screen and discuss include Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and No Country for Old Men.
