Autobiography and Memoir: Inside the Heart and Soul of Another

Great autobiographies are powerful evocations not just of a person but also of a time and place. They transport us inside the skin of another to experience events, people, and the world just as their authors did. Exposing life’s vulnerabilities and desires with grace and wit, these autobiographies haunt readers long after the last page. Through books, essays, and films, we will be transported to the trenches of war, an impoverished artist’s garret, and the seaside of Egypt; we will explore the lives of a black man in modern America and a daring woman in Paris; and, finally, we will join writers and filmmakers in old age as they take a backward glance at life. Readings include books and essays by Vincent van Gogh, Robert Graves, Michael Herr, Julia Child, James Baldwin, André Aciman, Nora Ephron, Joan Didion, Roger Angell, and Sidney Lumet.
