Fashion in Museums

While fashion exhibitions prove to generate the highest turnover and PR for museums, an ongoing debate has persisted over the past decade among critics, scholars, and museologists: Does fashion belong in museums? To answer this intricate question, this course travels to a different museum in the City each session. Examine firsthand the major fashion exhibitions and collections in New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum at FIT, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Cooper-Hewitt. Learn about the pioneering exhibitions in museum history; discover prestigious collections; and even handle historic objects—from 19th-century corsets to 1920s Chanel dresses, Dior couture gowns, and more.
