Management Diploma in Managing Workplace Diversity and Inclusion
Today, diversity and inclusion are widely accepted by employers as requirements for greater productivity and a competitive edge. In Citi’s 2014 annual Diversity Report, the company’s CEO stated, “Diversity and inclusion are central to who we are at Citi.” In September 2015, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a sweeping new diversity and inclusion policy to include a senior-level chief diversity officer at every State University of New York (SUNY) campus who will lead the charge to implement system-wide diversity initiatives. Perspectives like these are creating tremendous opportunities for well-trained, effective diversity and inclusion practitioners.
As a participant in the Diploma in Managing Workplace Diversity and Inclusion, you will become prepared to lead the efforts of private and public employers seeking to leverage the diversity of employees and customers. The courses in this program are highly interactive and provide the essential history of diversity as it moved from compliance to inclusion. The design, barriers, and benefits of diversity initiatives are discussed, explored, and challenged, helping you to understand how to be a strategic influence in an organization. The Diploma introduces best practices in the field and presents the role and competencies of an effective diversity practitioner.
The course work introduces methods to obtain support for diversity and inclusion from all levels of the workforce—employees, managers, and executives—and strategies to define and measure outcomes and return on investment. The final project affords the opportunity to gain practical skills through the development of a workplace Diversity and Inclusion Plan (or Annual Report). You will begin this project by assessing the legal compliance and cultural competency of a workplace. Next, you will outline the workplace’s mission, vision, and business strategies, and you will design initiatives that are aligned with business goals and that address the specific issues you identified in the assessment. Your plan will set goals, objectives, and expectations; define how to measure success; and assess the sustainability of the diversity and inclusion plans. (If students already have a Diversity and Inclusion Plan, then they will develop an annual Diversity Report that details the progress in meeting diversity goals and objectives. Developers of both documents will need to measure outcomes.) Finally, your plan or report will be assessed by senior-level persons in the field who will provide feedback about the plan’s designs, content, sustainability, and possibilities for success.
- The skill set to act as adviser to executive management on diversity and inclusion strategies, progress, and compliance
- The ability to investigate and resolve complaints of discrimination
- The knowledge to assess a workplace for barriers and challenges that impede diversity and inclusion and for strengths in place that can help
- The ability to plan and implement training programs and other initiatives that are designed to accomplish diversity and inclusion goals and objectives
- The ability to communicate the diversity and inclusion assessment, plan, and status of goal attainment
Schedule and Format
- Blended (online and in-person)
- Four noncredit courses
- On average, students take one course per semester, fall/spring/summer
- The Diploma must be completed within two years
The Diploma is awarded to students who successfully complete the four required courses within two years.
