Introduction to Critical Infrastructure: All-Hazards Approach

Energy and water, communications and transportation, and everything in between—these are the essential elements of any developed society. Few things have a greater impact to the delivery of goods and services than an interruption to any one of these sectors. The protection and resilience of these critical services are vital to the preparedness and postdisaster activities of governments, emergency responders, and the private sector. This course analyzes the critical issues associated with infrastructure protection and risk-reduction activities. It provides a framework for identifying and organizing critical infrastructure and explores the legislative and regulatory authorities for critical infrastructure protection and resilience. The course leverages extensive case studies in order to highlight security and resilience challenges, best practices, and lessons learned from a range of all-hazards threats. It provides the foundation needed to leverage federal, state, and local partnerships and resources in support of risk reduction—all aimed at driving business continuity and preparedness planning.
