Fiction Writing Through Immersion

Forget the age-old advice, “write what you know,” and fine-tune your ability to imagine the “other.” In this course, learn the art of creating memorable characters and believable settings through immersive techniques aimed at transporting you beyond the borders of your personal confines and into the mind, body, spirit, and space of the “other.” Go as deep as you dare, with both on- and off-site immersive prompts. Then, benefit from in-class writing assignments and peer-review workshopping. Get lost in your characters’ unique tastes, from the musical to the literary to the culinary, and observe subjects and settings at off-site locations, such as coffee shops, parks, or museums. By the end of this workshop, you will have dynamic, three-dimensional characters and realistic settings for your next short story, play, novel, or novella.
