Decoding Sport: Examining Race, Gender, and Sexuality
In times of social change and unrest, sport has been one of the most influential mediums that has helped to challenge the national status quo. However, when faced with issues such as race and/or gender inequality, there remains a fundamental gap. In partnership with NYU’s Sports and Society, this course will explore the role that sport plays in today’s society by rediscovering the historic social constructs that have helped to shape specific social movements and other current behaviors, biases, and ideologies. We will examine today’s most pressing topics, such as activism, diversity and inclusion, gender equality, media biases, race relations, and sexuality. Additionally, we will analyze the role that athletes and corporate responsibility play toward achieving progress.
