Understanding Hotel Operations: Industry Structure and Trends

This introductory course provides an overview of the complex ownership and management structures in the lodging industry, as well as the different chain scale segments and the trends driving guest expectations. Class discussions will focus on the demographic changes; the tastes and preferences of consumers, especially of Millennials; and the disruptive nature of the sharing economy (Uber and Airbnb) and its impact on the traditional model for hotel services. Also, acquire an understanding of the shifts in services across hotels at all levels, and learn to identify growth areas in hotel development among chain scale segment and across both domestic and international markets. This course may include a guest speaker and a site visit. Career paths and further educational opportunities will be explored.
