An Afternoon with Gilgamesh

Spend an afternoon discussing key passages from the 4,000-year-old Epic of Gilgamesh, a work that stands at the headwaters of written literature. Making comparisons to biblical parallels, we’ll look at the character of Gilgamesh as a questing hero who seeks to understand the mystery of death. Though in the end his search for immortality is stymied, he has many intriguing adventures along the way. We’ll examine the hero’s encounters with the bull of the goddess Ishtar, as well as Gilgamesh’s “bromance” with Enkidu, the wild man who is, in fact, Gilgamesh’s double.
