The Darker Side of Noir: From Touch of Evil to Sweet Smell of Success

The usual image of film noir includes a private eye and a femme fatale, but noir is more of a movie mood than a genre, and its cynical attitude has influenced many different directors and has encompassed many kinds of stories. In this course, we will push outside the usual boundaries to look at six different kinds of tales—a caper film (The Asphalt Jungle), a social-commentary picture (Crossfire), a sports film (Night and the City), a police procedural (Touch of Evil), a newspaper drama (Sweet Smell of Success), and even a romance (In a Lonely Place). All very different, yet all definitely noir films—from the rainwashed streets to the secrets lurking in their shadows.
