Feature Writing for Print and Digital Media

This practical workshop is designed to prepare you for writing and publishing feature articles. Learn how to hone your interview skills, pitch your story to editors, and present a balanced narrative written with clarity and style. We will examine published stories and share student drafts to discuss how to write an arresting lead and a well-structured story. Course work includes numerous out-of-class writing/reporting assignments as well as commenting on fellow students’ drafts via Google Docs and Zoom discussions. You will receive professional editing from the instructor and valuable feedback from other students on your writing. Some Zoom class sessions may include guest editors/writers. The goal is to complete one full-length feature story suitable for submission to a newspaper, magazine, or website.

This course may be used to fulfill the requirements of the Certificate in Journalism and the Certificate in Storytelling. It may be taken to pursue these certificates, or as a standalone course.
